What's your favorite message board theme?

Post by Ringo Flinthammer » 09 Nov 2004 01:47 am

In case you haven't discovered it yet, this board comes pre-loaded with three dwarf-inspired message board themes.

Which do you like best?

(In case you don't know what we're talking about, go back to the Profile page -- link up top -- and scroll 2/3 down to see a drop down menu with all three themes. Yes, you must be registered to see any other than Friends in Low Places.)

They're all fantastic, I voted for Foundations of Stone though. I'm a sucker for a good black/red theme.

Love the beer mug smileys, btw.

Pedi/Beli pulled out all the stops on them. I think this is the first board with a designated STFU smilie as well ...

I liked FiLP and TKB both almost the same, chose FiLP for the mountains.
FoS was cool but the forums were too narrow, like only 1/2 the screen or 2/3rds or something.

Definitely the Foundations of Stone.

:D

Edit: on second thought, that theme is a bit narrow...

Nothing I can do about the size of FoS. That is how the original creator made the theme. It's best for those who have a resolution of 1024x768! And no worries, we might add a few more themes later on when creativity strikes.

As much as I like the Foundations in stone theme, specially since I run 1024x768 on my flatscreen, I found the bullets-system and whatnot easier on the eyes in FiLP, so am going to stick with that one, baby blue and all...=p

If there's anything people would like to see in future themes, let us know. We're not up to custom-making our own top to bottom yet, but there's a lot out there we can tweak and add our own touches to.

Having said that, Beli has a few more surprises up her sleeve for the coming weeks and months ...

On the theme width in FoS... I had the same prob on my board as well.. I use E107, a modified PHPBB.. dunno if yours is the same as I'm a board newb but if it is I think I might have a fix for you... If you're interested lemme know and I'll look up how I fixed mine.

We can probably copy FoS over to a FoS2 and make one skinny, and one not, so that everyone's happy. I'd love to see the fix you guys did.

It had to do with custom headers done to one of the .php files. I'll look it up and post.

Ok on mine what I did in the theme.php...

There's a section for Header and Footer

Header on mine starts with:
$HEADER =
Had to mess with it to find the ending, but basically I copied from $HEADER = all the way down to before it has $FOOTER = and then pasted it right above $FOOTER = and renamed $HEADER to $CUSTOMHEADER.

After that I deleted the (MENU=1) section of it.

Do the same thing with $FOOTER = and copy it again and replace it with $CUSTOMFOOTER = etc. etc.. on mine it had (MENU=2) which I deleted from the custom one.

Then in the next section, which on mine showed // [newsstyle]

I put this:
$CUSTOMPAGES = "forum.php forum_post.php forum_viewforum.php forum_viewtopic.php search.php";

So how I did all this was with alot of trial and error, I DLed the theme.php and made a copy of it and renamed it to themebackup.php and left it alone, I then would do changes to the theme.php, upload to see if I broke anything, if I did I'd reupload the themebackup.php in it's place to unbreak it until I got it right...

Sorry for the laymans terms and vagueness of it but I was really flying blind doing this on the fly. I don't know if ANY of it will help but I figured I'd post it so you could give it a shot, if it didn't work, only time and patience was lost :D

Hmm, that's probably enough to remind me of how to (probably) do this. I've hand-configured message boards back in the stone age (WebBBS, if you still remember that kind) and it used similar tags.

Thanks.

Crap there was also something I did with one of the width's as well I think... I can't remember :( But basically the menu's which I don't know if you have or not would take up 15% on the left and right of the theme and 70% was left for the rest... I think I had to change some of the widths to 100% in the custom headers and footers to adjust for this... again sorry for the vagueness
