Windows startup disk?

Post by Mildane » 09 Oct 2008 02:05 pm

I'm trying to get my friends computer started. All it brings up is a black screen with the text NTLDR is missing. So windows wont even load. I thought a startup disk might get it going but I have forgotten how to make them.

Anyone know?

Do you know if it gets past the BIOS start to try to boot to the hard drive? Or does this show up immediately? If it happens before the hard drive is accessed, you've got a problem on the motherboard, and a boot disk won't help you.

If you do get to the point where the computer is attempting to boot the next thing I'd recommend would be to go and download a Knoppix Linux distribution (conveniently sized to burn on a single cd). Burn it to a CD, and then try to boot to that instead. It will give you some tools to check the health of the hard drive.

Let us know how it goes and we'll see what else we can do.
