The Trouble with Gnomes

Shevik slashed clean through the last of the gnolls and leaned on his sword to catch his breath. Wiping his blade with the orc scalp at his belt, he looked around. “Now where did that damn gnome get to?” he though aloud.
“Look, Shev, look! I found it!” shouted Lefty. Shevik looked down the cave to see his gnomish companion scurrying along toward a huge wooden chest, resplendent in its gold and platinum bindings and clasps.
“Wait! Don’t touch…” He began to yell, just as Lefty reached up to unhasp the first lock, when ---KABLOOM--- there was a flash, the smell of brimstone, and three (why never just one or two?) lava demons appeared just the other side of the chest, which quickly faded away. “Such an obvious trap,” sighed Shevik, as Lefty came running back towards him, even faster than he had run toward the false treasure. Hoping he had time, Shevik laid an ice trap at his own feet. As Lefty reached him, and the demons began heading their way, Shevik scooped up his tiny friend and turned to run out of the cave, whistling for his pet leopard at the same time.
“Put me down, Shev!!! We can fight ‘em, Shev! There is treasure back there somewhere, Shev! The map says so! Come on, Shev, put me down!” Lefty’s little legs were kicking wildly, but Shevik’s grip was firm on the gnome’s belt. “SSSHHEEVV!!!!! Put me down!!! I’ll fight them myself!”
Shevik heard his trap explode and risked a look over his shoulder. The demons were slowed by the ice for now, and he could see daylight at the opening of the cave. His pet leopard was silhouetted at the cave mouth. As he reached the mouth of the cave, he laid an explosive trap, then grabbed a rock from the ground with his free hand and tossed it on the catch pin as he dove for cover, shielding Lefty with his own body.
