Shattering the Captain

It was a tough race (but not the toughest: Mulverick has that distinction) but after 4-5 attempts, the Riding Crop was mine. He dismounted me 3 times (only one fatality) and gave me the slip 2 times.

Great money source and defeating the good ol' Captain gives 1k rep.

Definitely worth it.

Holy crap! You did it! I'm still stuck on the first of the two Alterac Valley racers.

Once you get over the "it's not really a race" bit, the quest plays off differently. Ichman's trick is to follow him from the sides and from above. First person view helps out a lot -but do it once you have the route down cold. You can remain a good 4-6 bodies away from him and still be within range.
Mulverick is the tough one, with the twists and double-backs. I belive his race is lenghtiest one. Him I followed from below and from the sides. His flares can be easily avoided from that distance. Remember when he's approaching the runway, he "buzzes" the tower, turns and then lands. I actually got dismounted by him over the landing strip because he fired up every flare he had. Luckily, I landed on the strip and got the credit.

Skyshatter's challenge lies in the fact that his meteors come from everywhere. You fly high, in 5 seconds he's gonna meteor high; you fly low, meteors go low. You fly on his side for more than 5 seconds and you're gonna get it (I got it and fell for the first time over the edge...it wasn't pretty). Ignore the skyguards, fly first-person perspective and Alt-Z for better view.

You dont' need to beat the pilots in any race. You just have to remain close enough to keep the quest active. Do that and you're golden.

Grats, Kyro! Skyshatter is all that stands between me and victory now. After a dozen or so attempts I finally beat Mulverick, though it was by the skin of my teeth!

Luckily my corpse was still in range of him so I was able to get credit despite my untimely demise.

Nice work, Kyroson! I'm also stuck on Skyshatter for that quest line.

So, you can stay near him, you just have to constantly change your position respective to him? Would that be a viable strategy?

I ask because everyone keeps telling me that you have to memorize the route and stay slightly ahead of him, but I haven't bothered to try that, yet.

Yes. You don't need to be ahead of him. His "you're still in this quest" range is shorter than Mulverick and Ichman's but you can be behind him and still complete it.

All those times flying in City of Heroes helped quite a bit, because I kept my fingers on W, A, D and spacebar to dodge whatever he fired at me.

Memorizing the route helps in those times he slows down and tries to give you the slip (one time I managed to catch him by what I could see out of the corner of the screen) but as long as you keep your distance, move frequently and have an idea where he's going, you're set.

Congrats; I'm still on Mulverick's race, though I haven't attempted it in months. -_-

A pity the quest reward from Skyshatter doesn't stack with Crusader Aura for us paladins, though, but it's still an awesome achievement nonetheless. =D

I'm a slacker. I have yet to get beyond neutral with the Netherwing. :(

It's worth it. I raised enough money for my epic griffon in just a couple weeks by focusing solely on the daily quests.
